‘Four-eyes! Four-eyes! Four-eyes!’ was the insult my elementary classmates used to call me when I was a little girl. While growing up, I knew I was different from other kids. Unlike them, I have to wear prescription glasses so I can see things. Otherwise, I will likely fall on the ground, bump into the wall, and cannot read anything written on the whiteboard. These unfortunate events happened to me when I did not wear my prescription glasses because I was embarrassed about being teased by other kids my age.
Luckily, my parents did not get mad at me. They tried their best to explain why being different from others is okay. From then on, no matter how many times I have been called ‘Four-eyes’ by my classmates, none of those mattered to me—even when my eyesight grades increased.
Despite wearing prescription glasses religiously and visiting an eye doctor in Singapore every one to two years, my vision did not improve. Using computers and watching television up close were two factors that contributed to the deterioration of eyesight. I tried to limit my screen time while growing up but surfing the internet has become an integral part of my life, particularly in my studies.
The same goes now that I am working. As a webtoon artist, I spend most of my time drawing webtoon characters, thinking of script lines, and reading commentaries from webtoon readers. In other words, my life revolves around my computer or my laptop.
My Mother Got My Back
Due to my hectic schedule, I barely have time to visit an eye specialist in Singapore. My go-to eye clinic closed down because they moved abroad. That was another problem I had to solve—finding an eye doctor.
My mother got so mad at me for not paying attention to my health. So on my behalf, she was the one who found an eye clinic near my studio unit. Since the location is a few steps away, my mother said I had no excuse for saying I had no time or it was too far.
Before I visited the eye clinic in Singapore in person, I checked their website first to see the schedule of their operating hours. I found out that they are open on Saturdays from 9 am to 4 pm. That works perfectly for me because I am most free on Saturdays, not unless there are upcoming holidays.
What Did I Bring?
Since seeing an eye doctor was nothing new to me—despite being unable to visit for years because of work, I still remember what to do.
– Bring my old and current prescription glasses
– Wrote down the list of medications and health conditions
– My medical insurance information
– My medical history (you do not have to bring this if you have been their patient before)
What Happened During The Visit?
The eye specialist from this clinic in Singapore was helpful. They took the time to let me know about my eye condition and explained that I qualified for Lasik vision correction. Going through this procedure will help me regain normal vision.
